Hi Dr. Bates,

I was checking out music websites and inadvertently arrived at your info. I am a graduate from Tintic high (Class of 2000) Becky Gomez (now Freemont). I was pleasantly surprised to see how well you have done for yourself. Greatness has seemed to be vacant in the departed of Eureka. But I'm proud to say I have too found my place in life; I have been married now for 6 years to Kevin Freemont. And I have a beautiful little 4 year old girl named Jasmine. I have a degree in the Medical Field. Right now I am working with children, and loving every minute of it. You were a beacon of inspiration for me as a teacher, even though music didn't end up being my forte. It was the foundation for my life. Every step has led me to my irreplaceable ray of light and hope; my daughter.

I was mostly curious to see if you remembered me, and would like to keep in touch via internet. Let me know if that interests you.

Hope to hear from you soon,
                           -Becky

"Just a bunch of talk"? Blah. I like reading on the MayDay site. I think discourse is the best way to share and maintain good ideas. By the way, I just read your article from the ACT journal on a nurturant ethic for music education and really enjoyed it. Thanks!

How would this be accomplished in band class? I think it would be nice to integrate American brass band traditions. Even though brass bands in America were influenced by the great European tradition, they enjoyed popularity in American communities for a long time. Wouldn't it be neat to see brass bands (we can go ahead and include woodwinds...I guess...) pop up around the country?

I'm going to use this for my Music Appreciation class "final" project (expanded to include rock or alt or whatever the kids want to research). Thanks for the great idea!

I took a course on country music through my university a few years ago. Blase Scarnati was the professor and it was an online course. Amazing amounts of media content and, for a girl who doesn't like country, very informative and interesting. Here's his faculty page: http://www.cal.nau.edu/music/faculty/scarnati.asp. As far as I know the course is still available!

Nice idea. I was wondering how you would determine what is "country" and what is not. When I turn on a country radio station, it sounds a lot like rock and roll with a Texas accent. Does that mean that Z.Z. Top is a "country" band or should we just accept poplar culture's view of what is country music and what is not?

How interesting to find someone combining interests in social class and music education. I'll look forward to reading more about these connections in your work and learning from you.

I 've been doing that for a number of years. The kids love it! I actually have to keep the machine out of sight on the days we are not "doing karaoke"
or they become too disappointed. Unfortunately, I do have colleagues who disapprove of this because it does not promote "good singing". I am so thankful for this website and others like Mayday . It reassures me that I am not completely crazy re garding my educational pedagogy and philosophy!
