About Me
May 17th, 2006 by vincebates
This is my fifteenth year as a music teacher and my first teaching college. I live in Maryville, Missouri with my wife, Kristin, and our three (soon to be four) children. My plan with this blog is to explore the many ways to enjoy musicing and the place and potentials of musicing in schools.
Dr. Bates,
I came across this website as I was looking at my Alma Mater’s website (NWMSU). I am a former student of Northwest who is now pursuing my doctorate in music education at the University of Georgia (taking comps in the fall).
I am really excited that you have chosen Northwest as a home. I am excited that they have a scholar in music education philosophy and in gender studies. Enjoyed reading parts of your blog. I hope to get to meet you at a convention some time!
Dr. Bates
I was just looking up some information on Northwest’s site when I came across your website. I graduated from NWMSU in 2000 with a degree in Vocal Music Education (although I was heavily involved as a horn player, too!) Anyway, I teach high school vocal music in Minnesota, and I really enjoyed reading some of your blogs! They were very inspirational to me and I hope to meet you in person someday so we can discuss music education philosophy! Northwest is very lucky to have you on staff…I wish you were there when I was in school! Best of luck with the upcoming school year! Go BEARCATS!

Thanks for the comment, Camilla. I would love to discuss music education philosophy sometime. You can email me directly if you would like. Also, we discuss music education philosophy on the MayDay Group dialogs and you are welcome to join in there as well.
Hey Dr. Bates,
I was checking out the Mayday Group site and I stumbled on this…great stuff! I’m sure I’ll be in touch!!
Hi Dr. Bates,
I was checking out music websites and inadvertently arrived at your info. I am a graduate from Tintic high (Class of 2000) Becky Gomez (now Freemont). I was pleasantly surprised to see how well you have done for yourself. Greatness has seemed to be vacant in the departed of Eureka. But I’m proud to say I have too found my place in life; I have been married now for 6 years to Kevin Freemont. And I have a beautiful little 4 year old girl named Jasmine. I have a degree in the Medical Field. Right now I am working with children, and loving every minute of it. You were a beacon of inspiration for me as a teacher, even though music didn’t end up being my forte. It was the foundation for my life. Every step has led me to my irreplaceable ray of light and hope; my daughter.
I was mostly curious to see if you remembered me, and would like to keep in touch via internet. Let me know if that interests you.
Hope to hear from you soon,
-Becky
